Frequently Asked Questions: Facials

An Apprentice Esthetician is an esthetician-in-training licensed to gain hands-on experience and are allowed to perform services, such as basic facial procedures and waxing, under supervision. When they pass State Board, the apprentice becomes a licensed esthetician. They are allowed to do more advanced facial procedures such as dermaplaning, brazilian waxing, chemical peels, and more.

Depending on the treatment and your skin goals, we recommend every 2 to 4 weeks. Remember, consistency is key to a new and improved beautiful skin!

We recommend new clients choose our Express or Customized Facial. With the express, it's a good service for those looking for a quick spa experience, or someone dipping their toe into facials. However, if you are looking to address your skin concerns with more results, I recommend the Customized Facial.

Yes, our Soothing facial targets clients with sensitive skin, rosacea, and compromised skin. We use products that calm down redness and inflammation. However, the skin is constantly changing and can sometimes be unpredictable. You may experience a reaction.

Yes. We avoid any products containing salicylic acid, retinol or any form of vitamin A, benzoyl peroxide, caffeine, and more during pregnancy or nursing. However, pregnancy can cause new allergies or sensitivities. Please consult with your doctor before proceeding with your facials.

The product line we currently use is Circadia. The majority of their products use gluten-containing ingredients derived from wheat, rye, barley, and oats. However, we do use products that are gluten-free from their line. Treatment is limited. We are doing our best to find another product line to best fit the gluten-free demographic.

Yes. Depending on your allergies (dairy, nut, latex, soy, shellfish, medications, etc.), we can create an alternative facial treatment. Be aware that we are not responsible for any new allergies that may arise.

Every season, we create a custom facial perfect for the holiday season. While focusing on skin conditions to help you deal with the weather changes.

In the Triple Berry Brightening and Luxe Lift, we use a more active enzyme treatment. We recommend doing the Customized Facial or Express Facial to introduce a gentler enzyme treatment before getting the full benefits of those services.

We currently do not provide those services as our Apprentice Esthetician are in training and are not licensed to do so.

Based on Circadia's protocol, if you are doing:

  • Neurotoxin (Botox, etc.) or fillers: May perform before injections or one week after injections.
  • PDO Threading: May perform a facial before threading or 60-90 days post-threading.
  • Laser hair removal: May perform the day before laser or three days post laser.
  • Ablative laser: May perform before laser or 8+ weeks post laser.
  • Surgery: May be performed before surgery or post-op when the treatment area is fully healed
  • Deep Peel: May perform one week before peel or 8+ weeks post peel.
  • Microneedling: May be performed before microneedling or 2 weeks post microneedling.

All clients must be consulted with their doctor or esthetics treatment provider. These timelines are subject to change based on the directions of your provider or physician. We may request a note before proceeding with our facials.

We can not perform a facial if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Open Wounds or lesions
  • Any Contagious Diseases
  • Skin infections or diseases (Viral, Fungal, or bacterial)
  • Active Cold sore or herpes
  • Severe sunburn
  • Active flare-ups (Eczema, psoriasis, etc.)
  • Undiagnosed lumps or swelling
  • Broken bones
  • Bruising or active bleeding
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Fever
  • Currently did another esthetic treatment (Botox, fillers, microneedling, laser hair removal, etc.)
  • Currently on any skin-thinning, acne, or exfoliating treatments (including but not limited to Retin-A, Renova, Adapalene, Accutane, Tazorac, Azelex, Differin, Glycolic acid, Salicylic, AHA treatments/products, Hydroquinine, Vitamin A, and so on). Discontinue usage can range from 2 weeks to 3 months before getting a facial. Accutane must stop for a minimum of 1 year.

The following conditions are contraindications that will not necessarily stop the treatment from taking place, but they may mean that the treatment is restricted/ adapted or may need a doctor's approval:

  • Pregnancy or nursing
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Cancer (Undergoing chemo)
  • Rosacea
  • Allergies
  • Cuts/abrasion/broken skin
  • Eczema, psoriasis
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Certain medications
  • Esthetic treatment (Botox, fillers, microneedling, laser hair removal, etc.)

When in doubt, check in with your doctor. We are more than happy to supply information on ingredients and products used.

We recommended:

  1.  Do not exfoliate the night before or the morning of your facial. Exfoliation can make your skin more sensitive and can lead to irritation and compromising your skin barrier.
  2.  Avoid tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure at least a week before your facial. Treatments can further irritate sunburned skin, leaving you red, raw, and uncomfortable.  Severe sunburn will not be serviced. Your skin needs time to heal!
  3. Avoid any hair removal treatments at least 48-72 hours before your appointment, especially on areas like your face, neck, eyebrows, or back.
  4. Avoid scheduling your lash extension before your facial treatment. Hot towels, steam, and products used will affect the fresh lash glue and extensions. However, we will do our best to avoid the eye area. But we do not guarantee your lashes will not be affected.
  5. Avoid any sweat-inducing activities (hot tubs, saunas, extreme labor, gym, etc.) Sweat, oil, and bacteria can interfere with the treatment. Your pores may still be open, making your skin more vulnerable to irritation. Schedule any sweat-inducing activities early morning, then take a cool shower. Or wait 24-48 hours after your facial.
  6. Expect your makeup to be removed. We are cleansing and exfoliating your skin to bring out its natural glow. If you have an important event or are wearing heavy makeup, we suggest rescheduling for another day. As makeup can clog your pores, leaving it on too long before a facial can increase your chances of breakouts or irritation after the treatment.
  7. Discontinue usage of any Retinol and other potent skincare ingredients for the recommended time, 2 weeks to a year (depending on the product).  Using these products before a facial could amplify any redness, sensitivity, burn, or discomfort during the treatment. It’s best to give your skin time to calm down.
  8. Complete the Skincare Consultation Form truthfully and honestly. List all allergies, medications, surgeries, and any plans before the facial. Please do not hide any information; your health and skin are important to us.
  9. Make sure to stay hydrated!

We recommended:

  1. Do not exfoliate after the facial treatment. We recommend you exfoliate 3-5 days after the facial.
  2. Wait at least 12-24 hours to apply any makeup. Let the treatment soak into the skin and work its magic!
  3.  Avoid touching your face and picking. We hold and touch a lot of bacteria and dirt throughout the day. We don't want you to clog up your pores and undo your facial!
  4. Use less, gentler facial products. Using harsh products ( AHA's, BHA's, Vitamin A, retinols, etc.) will cause the healing process to slow down and cause irritation, sensitivity, redness, and more.
  5. Avoid overexposure to the sun/UV for at least 48 hours. Use sunscreen to protect your skin in between facial treatments!
  6. Avoid sweat-inducing activities (gym, hot tubs, hot showers, saunas, etc.) Sweating can lead to irritation, redness, and clogged pores after a facial. Give your skin at least 24-48 hours to recover.
  7. Do warm to cool showers for at least 48 hours.
  8. Do not rub or cause friction to the treated skin, as your skin is in a delicate state.
  9. Hold off on esthetics treatments (microneedling, botox, fillers, waxing, etc.) for at least a week or more to heal your skin.
  10. Hydrate. Hydrate, Hydrate! It helps clear toxins and support the skin's natural healing process.

We recommend you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. Avoid any clothing that will cause friction against the treatment area. We also provide spa wraps for your convenience.

We know you are eager to achieve and see your skin goals. While facials can leave your skin refreshed, long-term skin concerns, such as the degree of sun damage, level of pigmentation, severity of acne, etc., take time to treat.

The rate of improvement depends on your skin type, condition, age, diet, and lifestyle (smoking, outdoor exposure, tanning beds, excessive alcohol consumption, and/or recreational use of controlled substances). It will greatly affect and diminish the effectiveness and result of treatment. Once you leave the treatment room, the rest is up to you. That is why aftercare is so important.

Think of it as a workout. In one session, you wouldn't gain six abs! It takes time, patience, and consistency. Don’t pressure yourself (or your esthetician) for immediate transformations—good skin takes time and consistency. You got this!

After a facial, it's normal to experience a little bit of redness. It can be due to increased blood flow, minimal irritation, or sensitivity. It should be temporary. Apply a cold compress to relieve some of the redness, irritation, or sensitivity. If problems persist for more than 48 hours, please contact your nearest doctor.

Some of the products we use increase cell turnover. Hidden pimples, dead skin cells, and trapped oils will come to the surface of the skin faster than usual. Think of it as if your skin is detoxing. This is a normal process called purging. Purging happens in locations where you frequently get pimples and lasts 4-6 weeks. Breakouts will appear in both old locations and new locations. Breakouts can be caused by hormonal imbalances, stress, and diet. This is where patience and consistency are key to your skin goals. Don't give up!

We do not serve clients under the age of 16. Under the age of 18 requires guardian consent and a signature. They must be present at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions: Waxing

We recommend your hair to be the size of a grain of rice, which is roughly 1/4 inch.

It depends on a person's pain tolerance. In general, hard wax is less painful than soft wax. If you are worried, you can take an ibuprofen before your appointment.

Yes, we use Hard Wax products from Italwax and Black Coral for sensitive skin.

Depending on your allergies (dairy, nut, latex, soy, shellfish, medications, etc.), we may or may not be able to wax you. However, we do our best to choose hypoallergenic waxes.

Everyone is different, and everyone's pain tolerance is unique. One client says the upper brow hurts more than the lower part of the brow. While another client says the opposite. There is no true "most/least" painful body part. However, when you wax, the hair grows thinner and becomes less "painful" over time.

Waxing yanks the hair from the follicle and damages the follicle's ability to produce hair. This causes it to thin and grow back at a slower rate.

Unlike shaving, you are cutting the hair at skin level and it seems to grow back "thicker." In reality, it does not grow "thicker." You shave the point of the hair strands, making it seem thick.  Shaving can cause ingrown hairs, razor burn, discoloration, and itchy regrowth. Waxing reduces and eliminates those issues.

Also consider how much time you’re spending shaving every couple of days VS the 30 minutes every few weeks you’ll be waxing.

Generally, about every 2-6 weeks. This depends on your hair growth rate, location, etc. We are more than happy to schedule you sooner than the recommended time! Just give us a call or reschedule on our online booking site.

Hair grows at different rates. You may see strands of hair after your first few waxing sessions. The goal is to sync the hair growth. With consistency, roughly in 3-6 months, the hair should be in sync and last you 2-6 weeks hair-free.

This is a generalization/estimate. Genetics, aftercare, growth rate, texture of hair, etc., play a role in how long waxing lasts.

No. Wax works best with longer hair. If needed, we are more than happy to trim for you.

Depending on your pain tolerance, it could feel scotchtape yanking your hair to something more. Some say it's a short stinging sensation.

After taking off the strip, you may see some redness, discomfort, tenderness, bumps, histamine reaction, or pinpoint bleeding. All temporary and normal. If you are a first-time waxer, you can expect to see pinpoint bleeding. It just means your hair was yanked from the follicle.

If you have not disclosed certain products, medications, etc that you are on. You may experience your skin lifting. Which is why it is very important to list all medications, products, etc you use. Your skin is important to us!

We will not wax you if you have any of the following:

  • Any Contagious Disease
  • Skin infections or Diseases (Viral, Fungal, or bacterial)
  • Active Cold sore or herpes
  • Active flare-ups (Eczema, psoriasis, etc.)
  • Undiagnosed lumps or swelling
  • Broken bones
  • Bruising or active bleeding
  • Fever
  • Currently taking Accutane or have stopped taking it for less than a year.
  • You are in cancer therapy, getting chemotherapy or radiation.
  • Currently did an esthetics treatment (microneedling, botox, facials, etc.)
  • Have been in direct sunlight for a long period of time. You have used a tanning bed within the last 24 hours.
  • Anywhere that has been waxed within the last 24 hours.
  • Areas where you have used any alpha hydroxy acids over 8%.
  • If your skin is inflamed, sunburned, cut, or irritated.
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • You are taking any prescription acne medication.

  1. If you are currently using any of the following prescription medications, you cannot receive a waxing service. Discontinue use of these medications for a minimum of 2 weeks to 3 months before waxing: Adapalene (Acne medication), Alustra (Retin A), Avage (Acne medication), Avita (Retin A), Azelex (Peeling agent), Clindamycin, Differin (Acne medication), Doxycycline, Erythromycin, Isotretinoin (like Accutane), Madifloxicine, Metronidazole, Renova (Retin A), Retin A (Acne and Anti-aging medication), Tazarac (Acne medication), Tazarotene (Tazorac), Tetracycline, Tretinoin (Retin A)

If you have or are using any of the following products or conditions, THEY can make your skin more sensitive. Thin, sensitive skin is more vulnerable to lifting and sensitivity during waxing.

  • Other acne medications not listed above.
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic)
  • Oral or Topical Antibiotics
  • Salicylic Acids
  • Any acid-based products
  • Exfoliants or products with white willow bark
  • Taking blood-thinning medications
  • Taking drugs for autoimmune disease or Medications for Lupus
  • Taking prednisone or steroids
  • Psoriasis, eczema, or other chronic skin diseases
  • Rosacea or very sensitive skin
  • Using hydroquinone

Be cautious if you are:

  • You’re pregnant, taking birth control, hormone replacement, or antibiotics. Your skin may be more sensitive to waxing.
  • Drinking a lot of caffeine. Your skin can be extra sensitive to waxing and may be inflamed after waxing.
  • A smoker. Waxing can irritate dilated capillaries (weak or broken blood vessels), which are common in smokers.
  • Have drank alcohol the day of or the night before waxing. Alcohol causes the blood to rise to the surface of the skin and can cause the skin to bruise easily.

When in doubt, check in with your doctor. We are more than happy to supply information on ingredients and products used.

We do not serve clients under the age of 16. Under the age of 18 requires guardian consent and a signature. They must be present at all times.

We recommended:

  1. Do not exfoliate for 24-48 hours before your wax appointment
  2. Stop shaving or plucking. Make sure you have at least hair as the size of a grain of rice, 1/4 inch.
  3. Wear loose-fitting clothing. Make sure not to wear anything that would cause friction to your skin.
  4. Avoid any sweat-inducing activities (hot tubs, saunas, extreme labor, gym, etc.) for at least 24 hours. Sweat, oil, and bacteria can interfere with the service. Your pores may still be open, making your skin more vulnerable to irritation.
  5. Avoid tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure at least 72 hours before your wax.
  6. Discontinue usage of any Retinol and other potent skincare ingredients for the recommended time, 2 weeks to a year (depending on the product).  Using these products before a facial could amplify any redness, sensitivity, burn, or discomfort during the treatment. It’s best to give your skin time to calm down.
  7. Complete the Skincare Consultation Form truthfully and honestly. List all allergies, medications, surgeries, and any plans before the facial. Please do not hide any information; your health and skin are important to us.
  8. Make sure to stay hydrated!

We recommend:

  1. To avoid heat, sweat-inducing activities, and friction for the first 24-48 hours. Including, but not limited to, hot showers, saunas, a gym, and tight clothing to prevent further irritation.
  2. Shower with warm to cool water.
  3. Avoid touching the waxed area. Bacteria, dirt, and oil could irritate or clog the pores.
  4. Exfoliate after 48 hours. We recommend exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week.
  5. Make sure to use gentle products. And to moisturize the area.
  6. Not to shave between appointments. This could delay the process of syncing your hair growth.
  7. Don't overexpose to the sun or UV for at least 48 hours
  8. No swimming after 48 hours
  9. Wait to do any esthetics treatment for at least 72 hours or more. Consult with your esthetician treatment provider.
  10. HYDRATE!

After waxing, your skin may be red due to the trauma. It is completely normal and temporary. Apply a cool compress, and follow the aftercare protocols.

If your skin is showing signs of hives, itching, or extreme swelling, it could be an allergic reaction to products used. Immediately go to the nearest doctor.

Waxing can also cause a histamine reaction. This will appear in blotchy red patches, minor swelling, or raised bumps, similar to mosquito bites.  It's your skin's way of protecting itself from the trauma and products. It is completely normal and temporary. Apply a cool compress to lessen the symptoms and follow the aftercare protocol. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, go to your doctor.

If you have small pimples in the waxed area and exhibit any of the following: itching, redness, and burning, it is known as folliculitis. It is a skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles found in the skin become inflamed. This can have multiple causative factors, but is most commonly caused by:

  • Bacteria entering the open pores after waxing
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Excess oil production clogging the pores

To prevent this, it is essential to follow proper aftercare both before and after waxing. If symptoms persist or worsen after 48 hours, seek medical attention from the nearest doctor.
